Courtney M. Cook, MS, LCGC, served as the sole expert witness testifying in front of the Arkansas State Legislature on behalf of the Genetic Counseling Licensure Act of 2019. The goal of this act was to officially grant statewide licensure to board certified genetic counselors practicing in the state of Arkansas. The terms of licensure protect both the genetic counseling profession and the patients receiving genetic counseling services. Licensure requires that genetic counselors in the state meet and maintain certain standards in order to legally provide genetic counseling services to patients in that state.
Courtney was integral in the creation of the bill, and her testimony was paramount in the ultimate passing of the bill into law.
Courtney has also served as an expert witness for a medical malpractice lawsuit. This case concerned a genetic variant of unknown significance (VUS), a personal and family history of cancer, and the resulting medical management plans/lack thereof.

Why use a Genetic Counselor as an Expert Witness?
Genetic counselors are specifically trained to take complex scientific concepts and explain them in a way that the average person can understand. This is not only a specialized skill set, but it is an essential skill to have when testifying in front of a judge and jury.
Genetic counselors are experts in the field of genetics and genetic testing. We work extensively with multiple genetic testing labs, patients with various conditions, and other healthcare providers. Genetic counselors are the liaisons who coordinate the patient's testing and recommend future screening and management based on the results. We believe in using the right test, for the right patient, at the right time. Our goal is to give the patient information that will help them make their own informed and appropriate decisions about their healthcare.
