Appointments with Cook Genetics are conducted via telehealth and will be focused on Hereditary Cancer Predispositions.
All genetic counseling appointments with Cook Genetics are booked and billed via our online scheduling software. Click the Book Now tab to schedule your appointment. A credit card is required when you book your appointment in order to reserve your slot. Cancellation fees (without rescheduling) and no-show fees for the full cost of the appointment will apply. If you need to reschedule your appointment due to an emergency or unforeseen conflict, please email us at courtneycook@cookgenetics.com to reschedule at a more convenient time.
Our appointment costs are comparable to what insurance would reimburse for the same amount of time and service face-to-face, plus our extensive research time for your case behind the scenes. Please see the next section for insurance billing information.
Genetic testing itself (for Hereditary Cancer) is often covered by insurance, depending on your personal/family history, but it could be an additional cost. We will discuss the costs of testing and whether insurance billing is your best/most cost-effective option during your appointment. Bring a copy of your insurance card, just in case.
Do you bill insurance for...
Genetic Counseling Appointments? No. At this time, we do not bill insurance for genetic counseling visits. However, at the completion of your visit(s), you will receive copies of your genetic counseling notes. If you would like to seek reimbursement from your insurance company for the appointment, Cook Genetics can provide you with a receipt that contains ICD-10 codes and CPT codes necessary for insurance billing. You can submit these notes, receipts, and codes to your insurance company in an attempt to be reimbursed.
Genetic Testing? Yes! We can bill your insurance for Hereditary Cancer Genetic Testing. Bring a copy of your insurance card with you to your appointment. During the appointment, we will determine whether you meet national guidelines for genetic testing coverage. If you do, testing is likely to be covered by your insurance, but this is not guaranteed. Any genetic testing costs will be billed to you by the genetic testing lab at a later date, not by Cook Genetics. If you would prefer to pay out-of-pocket for genetic testing instead of billing your insurance, that is also an option. Out-of-pocket costs for testing are generally ~$250 for Hereditary Cancer, depending on the testing ordered. Again, the cost of testing will be billed to you by the genetic testing lab and is a separate fee from your genetic counseling visit fee(s).
***DISCLAIMER: Genetic Counselors do not practice medicine. It is up to you, the patient, to speak with your physician(s) to implement the screening/management recommendations made during your genetic counseling session(s). You will be provided with copies of your genetic testing results, genetic counseling notes, and family tree so that you can show them to your physician(s) for your future care.
